ENGINEERING UPDATE

Since 2005 Challenge has not been in steam. We have found problems with the boiler that would be too uneconomical to repair or refurbish. After a lot of deliberations and weighing up the options we have available it has been decided to install a new boiler.

The boiler will be very similar to the present one with three burners running on heavy oil as at present. It will be slightly smaller but about the same specification in terms of the amount of steam produced. The boiler room will look very similar to how it looks at present, but the advantages of a new boiler are many.

  •  It will last another 40-50 years keeping Challenge a working vessel for new generations to see.

  •  It will be far more efficient, costing far less to to get her in steam and keep her in steam.

  •  It will be much more friendly on the environment as it should burn with next to no smoke
    and other pollutants.
